Thomson Geer advises Trapeze Group on successful Opal 2.0 bus solution tender

May 13, 2026

Thomson Geer has advised global public transport technology provider Trapeze Group Asia Pacific Pty Ltd on its successful tender for the Bus Solution component of a multi-million dollar upgrade to the New South Wales Opal ticketing system.

The Opal 2.0 upgrade will enhance the Opal system with new technologies designed to improve journey planning and deliver more seamless and convenient ticketing experiences, supporting faster, connected and multi-modal journeys across the public transport network.

Thomson Geer advised Trapeze Group on its tender and contract negotiations with Transport for NSW. Our work also included assisting with complex contracting issues, such as intellectual property ownership, software licensing, data privacy, insurance, liability and indemnity settings, in the context of a multi-year hardware, software and services arrangement.

The team was led by Technology Partner Steven Hunwicks, who said: “This matter reflects the complexity and strategic importance of major public transport technology procurements. We were pleased to support Trapeze Group through the tender process and detailed negotiations for a project that has the potential to play an important role in the next generation of ticketing and transport technology in New South Wales.”

The project is strategically significant for Trapeze Group as a global leader in public transport technologies and services. Trapeze Group Australia is expected to deliver the Bus Solution in combination with its affiliate, ebblo, a global provider of intermodal transport control systems.

Trapeze Head of ITS and Sales David Eason said: “Thomson Geer’s expert legal guidance and strategic approach were integral to securing this tender. Their attention to detail, deep understanding of procurement and technology frameworks enables us to bring our technology solutions to this important upgrade to the Opal ticketing system.”

The tender will see Trapeze Group demonstrate its capability to support one of the largest public transport authorities and operators in the southern hemisphere, while further strengthening its position in the Australian and New Zealand market through a multi-year supply and services arrangement.
