He acts for leading financial institutions, insolvency practitioners and corporate clients.
His commercial litigation practice focuses predominantly on complex litigation, though he is also experienced in managing high-volume recoveries for financial institutions and large corporations. Joel’s insolvency practice includes acting in both contentious and non-contentious insolvencies, advising insolvency practitioners, secured lenders, distressed corporations and individual debtors across a variety of industries including tourism, mining and mining services and real estate.
Joel is committed to achieving commercial outcomes for clients either through litigation or other alternative means of dispute resolution.
Joel Shaw’s recent experience includes:
- Acting for the special purpose liquidator (RSM Bird Cameron) appointed to Octaviar Limited, an ASX listed entity with interests in tourism, hospitality and financial services which collapsed in 2008 with more than $2 billion in creditors.
- Acting for the liquidator of Australian Building Systems (FTI Consulting) in litigation which seeks to resolve the CGT obligations of external administrators. The litigation is part of the test case program which is funded by the Australian Taxation Office.
- Acting for the liquidator of Williams Corporation (FTI Consulting), the private development company of Queensland property tycoon, the late Keith Williams. The liquidation involves the partially completed luxury resort at Port Hinchinbrook off Cairns.
