Thomson Geer takes on global firms after announcing 3 rapid acquisitions of first class talent

17 August 2020

Off the back of acquiring the whole of global law firm Dentons Brisbane office in July, Thomson Geer has executed another strategic raid on global law firm DLA Piper.

Thomson Geer has secured the whole DLA Piper Perth Corporate team. Partners Scott Gibson, Marc Wilshaw and Michael Bowen along with a legal and support team of 8, will join Thomson Geer later this year.

The team was ranked no 2 amongst all Perth Transactional legal teams in 2019, executing more than $4.5b of deals, second only to Herbert Smith Freehills. They were also fundamental to DLA Piper winning the 2020 Lawyers Weekly Transaction Team of the Year Award.

Chief Executive Partner, Adrian Tembel said “Not only is this move central and fundamental to our long term Perth strategy but it is also a reinforcement of our national commitment to quality”.

“I am very proud of our M&A team nationally led by David Zwi on the east coast. Adding this west coast group will take our national capability to, I believe, an even higher level. ”

In another bold move, Thomson Geer has secured one of Australia’s pre-eminent media law teams from Mcpherson Kelley. The specialist Melbourne based team led by Partners Justin Quill and John-Paul Cashen, has a band-one Asia-Pacific ranking from specialist legal research analyst Chambers and Partners.

The team is currently representing more than 30 media outlets and journalists in the high profile George Pell contempt case.

The team also recently represented media personalities Sam Newman, Mike Sheahan and Don Scott on the high profile defamation claim by Nicky Winmar (who was represented by Leon Zwier).

Chief Executive Partner Adrian Tembel said “We are continually focussed on securing first class talent to complete our transition to major law firm status. Our lawyers are retained more and more to solve some of business and governments’ most challenging problems or to add value to large and complex transactions. The Quill/Cashen team will expose us to important high profile dealings in the Australian media sector”.

The news has been covered by several International and National media outlets, including the The Global Lawyer.
